I LIKE that description! In the beginning practice wearing gloves and
picking up bricks, old bisque and smooth cobbles of various sizes with
the tongs before you even light the kiln. In time you will gain
confidence and skill in picking up just about anything quickly with
tongs - maybe even tie your shoelaces!

I've fired up to 20 small pieces by myself, but I felt the last pieces
out of the kiln were almost too cool by the time they were pulled so I
don't do more than about a dozen anymore at a time.

Simona,
I fill my kiln to capacity which is anywhere from 3-12 pieces, depending =
on
size. The critical component is being sure you have the right number =
and
size of reduction barrels. I pull two or three pieces and then put the =
lid
back down and bring the temperature back up. I have done this 3-4 times =
per
firing. Sometimes I only pull one piece at a time. I always get good
results. When I put the lid back down I just crank the gas up high and =
it
takes just a few minutes until I am back to temperature. Give it a try =
and
see if this works for you.=20

If you're just starting, view the first few fires as practice sessions. =
If I

were you I would only put two or three pieces in there, and I would have =
a=20
separate can for each one. Learning to use those tongs can be like =
trying to
tie=20
your shoes with chopsticks at first. ;)
