Doing Raku with kids is sometimes easier than with adults. I have only =
had
adults singe their hair and eyebrows...after I told them not to look in =
the
kiln lid ports. I have only had adults throw sawdust into the reduction
barrel as the pot goes in and igniting as it does. I work with kids =
down to
the age of 7 and they do fine. BUT they know the rules and they =
practice
putting a lid on the garbage can, gently. Hair is tied up or under =
hats;
long sleeves and natural material...preferably coats and not nylon. =
They
also are shown how to gently put a lid on the can and they do it well. =
No
banging and jumping...they hold it like a shield. AND the excitement
afterwards is so great to see, especially when they open the cans. Big =
eyes
and lots of laughs. By all means Raku with kids but like anything else =
they
have to follow the rules. Now if I could get the adults to do the
same...WOW...that would be great!

Not when a child might be hurt.
Of course do Raku with them, but you do the hot stuff.
They can put glazes on, look at sample firings you might bring in.
They can look at HOW the kiln fires, consider the mix of gas and oxygen,
etc.=20
They can learn something about loading the kiln.
They can take detailed notes and systematically test the effects of
different=20
reduction materials.
Just have adults do the fire stuff.
