bisque firing tiles

I always bisque my tiles standing on edge. They heat more evenly on both
sides, water can get out of them more easily, there's no strain as they span
a gap, and you can fit more in your kiln.

Before I make a change to the way that I bisque fire my relief
tiles, I wanted to get some opinions.

I currently bisque fire my tiles by laying them flat on the shelves
inside of the kiln. I recently bought a tile rack (where they line
up vertically not stacked horizontally), but I don't know if this
will increase the warpage of the tiles. The other tile racks don't
work because my tiles are not a uniform size, they are rounded on
the edges and they are larger than a 4x4.

I haven't tried to pile them on top of one another as the depth
dimensions are uneven...but my main concern is about warpage no
matter how I fire them. So, basically, I am trying to maximize my
kiln space but minimize the warping. Any suggestions would be
appreciated...as I am still trying to learn my way around the kiln.

Could you explain how you do this?

Thanks Paul,

I read an article somewhere once where the potter was making replica
medieval tiles. They bisqued and glaze fired them without setters of any kind.

They stacked them on edge in a zig-zag pattern. (They were thick and could
stand up easily by themselves), then stacked the next layer in the opposite
direction.

The tiles were only glazed on the top surface, none on the sides but the
lead based glaze ran a little and stuck the tiles together on the edges a
bit. They said that the slight scars caused when they broke the tiles apart
were "authentic".

I thought it might be something like this.

Anyway, if that was an effect that one was willing to live with, it would
be a really economical way to fire.
