Hi Folks,
It appears that not only is the mortar melting but is volatilizing and
getting on the work. I fired "Malcolms Carbon trap" last week and got some
areas of some pretty funky looking texture. Yesterday I fired it again but
with a more heavy and sustained reduction after the "Soot" part of the
firing. I opend the kiln a bit ago to find very good carbon trapping, But
to my dissapointment The texture (bubbly looking gray" was all over the
outside of the piece but not on the inside. Piece was a large bottle form
with three 1/4 inch feet on the bottom. The bottom of the piece was just as
it should be, shiny orange. I can't think of anything that would explain
this other than this mortar problem. I guess I'll have to scrap it or do a
rebuild.
