I had some holes as result of crystal glaze I think the strong flux of
the glaze have melted the very strong shelf.
Could be your case?

Subject: Kiln shelves bend at cone 6

Hi,

Hope someone have some information on the following. We fire our kilns
to
cone 6 and after several firing, the shelves bend / bow -- some more
than
others. The kiln we use is Skutt 1227 and we use the half shelves (27")
which is about 5/8" thick. I know if I fire them in reverse several
time
they should bend back.

I wonder if anyone knows of a different brand that will not bend as
described.

Hope to hear from you.

Kindly,

Morty

Morty,

I cannot address the bending problem but I do know if you have kiln wash on
the shelves you do not want to reverse them. The wash will flake off and
fall onto firing ware. Have you checked that the cone 6 is actually cone 6
with self supporting cones?

try thorley,,, ask your supplier they should be able to help you out. your shelves probably aren't rated for ^6. it also depends on the heat work time,,, if your doing a 20 hour crystal firing that might be the problem.

morty...
where did you get these shelves in the first place? did they come second
hand with the kiln?
Your friendly neighbourhood pottery supplier (I know you have access to a
few from CT) should be able to recommend shelves rated for a higher temp.

Dear Morty,
What sort of a load are you imposing on your shelves? Do you know how
many pounds or kilograms each shelf supports?
An interesting question.
Best regards,
