kiln naming

you going to give the "baby" a name to distinguish the generic "my
kiln" from your full grown one?)

Dear Linda,
Well, yes, I suppose we should give him a name.

My car was dubbed Valentine, because the license plate starts with VD.
You can imagine how thrilled I was to drive around with those initials.
Sort of tarnished the beauty of the shine.

So, I suppose I could call my big kiln John Paul Ian (rather noble)
and the baby, Ron Tom Tony (sounds like a poolside drink)

That would basically round out the luck of the glaze gurus for me.

For the short term, I call them old and new. Mean Mommy.

regards from Alisa

Hey Linda & Alisa,

I may not be the most original but my kiln names are "Momma, Poppa & Baby.
(according to size of corse) It sure cut down on the "HUH?, which one?" factor!

I named one of my kilns "Pokey". When it arrived, the box
had holes that looked like they were poked from the inside out.
Not a thing was wrong with it . . . works great. I figured it was just
"Pokey".

My other kiln is named "Twice". It replaced a kiln that was struck
by lightning and I am praying that lightning won't strike "Twice"!

My diminutive test kiln was originally called "Beast", intended as an ironic
"Belly of the ..." comment. The family was terrified of it, convinced I was
going to incinerate the entire block with an 8" x 8" x 9" electric kiln, so
it was redubbed "The Brave Little Toaster." Now no one's afraid of the
appliance with the "friendly" name.

Greetings all,

As you might remember, I fired a kiln for the very first time about 2 weeks
ago. I got my very first wheel about...2 weeks ago. After all, when we
spend time getting to know one another we should at least be on a first name
basis right?! I'm into ritual and symbolism and so I have named them and
since the subject came up I shall share.

I have named the kiln "Brigid". Brigid is the Celtic goddess (I am of
Scottish heritage - McIntosh) of healing, fertility and hearth. She is the
patron of poets, smiths (claysmiths?) and doctors. She has three aspects
1.) Fire of Inspiration as patroness of poetry, 2.) Fire of the Hearth, as
patroness of healing and fertility, and 3.) Fire of the Forge, as patroness
of smithcraft and martial arts.

I have named my wheel "Arianrhod". Celtic goddess of the Silver Wheel.
Arian means "silver" and Rhod means "wheel" or "disc". She is the Celtic
Moon-Mother Goddess called the Silver Wheel that descends into the sea.
When I look at the aluminum head on my shiny new Pacifica it's very much
like the silvery disc of the moon. I have made my very first pot a small
votive type candleholder with her name carved into it and it will burn there
while we spin. I shall post a photo of it when I can.

LOL this could be WAY more than you wanted to know!

Waxing poetic,
Lorene

Hi!

As my new kiln arrived, I had to chuckle when I read the posts about "kiln naming." I always name my favorite things and had debated over a number of possibilities for the new L&L.

Thinking strictly of the "firing" aspect, my favorite was "David Byrne" (after the lead singer with the Talking Heads) until I remembered their hit song: "Burning Down the House."
As the kiln will be located in my basement... hmmmm... maybe a bad choice.

So, with its electronic controls, I decided to call it "Gridley." That way, I can program it, then stand back and sternly command: "You may fire when ready, Gridley!"

(If you're now scratching your head, you can either take a refresher on Spanish/Amer. war history: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/today/dec26.html, or enjoy a slight misquote by Daffy Duck: http://www.barbneal.com/daffy.asp, wav #16, which is probably where I heard it first!)

Hope this note finds you having an all-fired good day!
--Linda

My mother died shortly after my first New Years here
in Mashiko, over 4 years ago. She left me a sum of money that was
exactly what it cost to build my little woodkiln...

(This was an interesting co-incidence to me and
corresponds to the time when I was assisting with my late Zen teacher's
Dharma transmission to the 12 priest studying
with him. I was on hand to help with any thing that might crop up.
My teacher was in remission with his battle with Limphoma and had enough
strength to do the ceremony with the help of a visiting Japanese
teacher. I was asked to quickly make a pilgrim's staff to use in
the ceremony. They forgot to obtain one. The cermony was going to
happen within an hour, so I ran out to the alley, ran up and down its
length and finally found a small elm tree, a sort of weed tree. I
blessed it & cut it down. I cut both ends twice to smooth them, skinned
the bark with my draw knife and when it was finished, I thought the
height was very familiar. I stood up against it and it was EXACTLY
the same height as me: 5'8.5") But I'm off track.... Back to the kiln....

So my kiln, with a clay statue of Bruce Lee on the
back of the roof (made in Miyagi, given to me by a young Mashiko potter)
and a figurine of Bodhidharma (old, locally made, glazed Sage (Say-gee)
green on the front of the roof, is named after my Japanese mother.
