Hi Dave, Tony, all...
Similar here, nor is it 'as' IF there were some 'local'
mom-n-pop Tire store for that matter...
But the next time I need some 4:50-18 Bias Tires for my
'bike, or some ('true') 7:50-17 eight-ply Bias Tires for the
Buick, or some four-ply 6:50-18s for the
Tow-About-Compressor, I see no point in trying to imitate
Diogenes (lantern or no) and going from
tirestore-to-tirestore-to-tirestore-to-tirestore-to-tirestor
e here in town...just to get some gumperclerk or gumperboss
as was hired rightoouttaschool maybe last week, with a
'management' degree, go..."Huhwhat?" in his 'dockers', or
'bugleboy' outfit, where it will only get 'worse' if I DID
explain it to him...
I will get them from somewhere far away, where, is where
they will be...
In fact, the last time I did buy some new Tires, they came
from Los Angeles, having been made in New Zealand, where,
the old 'Firestone', "Diamond Tread" moulds went, for making
the 700-17s my Chevrolet (at the time) liked to have on
it...
So...whatchagunnado?
Get 'em where they are to be got...
And...
Love!
And hopefully...Keep on rollin'...
Phil

David: How embarassing it must have been to go and ask the local fillin'
station to install tires you bought not from them, but thru the internet. I
know they won't be buying pots at Farmhouse Pottery this Christmas.
Why I would never do this
-1. my local tire guy buys something for his wife several times a year from
me
2.if I have trouble with my tire he will service me and do all the hassling
with Michelin
3.I believe in a fair price, so that a person can make a fair living- The
lowest price is not the law in our household
4. If you're going to turn these fillin stations into strictly tire service
and self serve gas stations then the cost of tire installions is going to go
up. Installation and balancing are included in the price at Ericway Tire in
Beamsville.
Toni Smith and her Stihl dealership must have read your post and wept.
Business is changing but we don't have to like it or support that change.
If you smell something bad in your truck don't blame the guy for putting
Rottweiller poo behind your seat.
cheers,
Tony
Why not download Fred Eaglesmith's White Rose Fillin Station from the
internet? It's free and hell who needs songwriters anyway?

Tony -
On the basis of this post, I am making you
my new kiln firing charm.
I will build a little statue and let you and Sheila
know if he explodes in the first firing!
Chris Campbell - in North Carolina - I wanted to
say 'kiln god' ... but I did not want to give Sheila
a seizure while she rolled on the muddy floor
laughing!

Dear Tony,
The tire brand I wanted (Yokohama, which is made in the USA, by
the way) is not sold in my town.
Kinda like if I want a Tony Clennell mug I'm not gonna buy a different
one at the Painted Crayon Ceramic Shop just because it is local.
My tire shop owner was very happy to give the installer something
to do, since he was sitting by the stove drinking coffee, and he made
$62.50 for 40 minutes of work. Told me to be sure and come back
and let them rotate the tires at 8000 miles - for a fee, of course.
With all that figured in, my tires will cost me as much as the ones form
the local shop. But I got what I wanted - the tire overwhelmingly
rated as best for the vehicle by the CRV Owners Club.
Luckily, the local lawn mower shop sells Stihl saws. If they didn't
I might well buy my next chainsaw on the Internet.

Anne: if you follow the post back a step or two, it had to do with
buying directly from galleries vs. buying pots on the internet. David
was offering a metaphor. Sometimes you just have to step back and look
at the bigger picture. It's not so far off topic if you look at it in
context.. or if you know the kick-ass potters involved and know that
THEY are all about clay, and their ongoing on-line relationship has
tread these paths before on different subjects.
Now, that Clennell character is a different story. He is apt to post
about any old thing the cat leaves on the porch -- random rants about
homeschooling, saskatchewan real estate, ladybugs, vehicles, wine and
whiners.. folks like that, well, what can you say?
I personally would never allow my focus to stray from the topic of clay.
I have actually used the word clay three times so far in this very post.
By the way my cone box show experiment turned out kind of interesting
but i put salt directly on it and instead of (along with) fuming it
spalled/pitted.. so maybe next time around. i sunk the interesting
flawed bbq-grill-fired thing in Gottfried creek to confuse someone
someday.. did some glaze tests with kaopectate, zinc, tums mixed with
slip in various combinations but i think it needed ground glass..(and
higher temp)... being without a kiln never seemed like a big deal in the
past but now it's a hardship. i have resorted to making peyote-stitch
earrings with seed beads instead...
yours, kelly
who is STILL in florida (neener, neener).. eating ceviche and swimming
in the ocean and watching shore birds eat cochinas in the beach sand
like little pastel colored pistachios.. and i went shopping with mom to
get a great black dress for the opening and the NCECA clayart shin-dig..
(there, I mentioned a ceramics conference! I am so ON TOPIC..)

I wanted to thank someone who posted requesting info about something and
said "please email me directly so as to not clog up the board". Sure sure
you boys are entertaining and all, and I am not the moderator, but dont you
guys think that maybe personal discussions about tires and the like should
be saved for personal exchanges instead of being posted here on clayart?
Okay, I haven't had my morning coffee yet, but i somehow don't think i am
the only one who feels this way (only everyone else has already had their
coffee and are not edgy enough to speak up.) thanks.

The joshing back and forth is fine, entertaining and so forth. But
unfortunately, the question that was requested to be emailed directly (I
already forget what it was) was directly clay-related and I thought, "Gee,
let's not have the clay-related stuff off-list while the chat is on-list."
Sometimes people say, "Email me off-list so we don't clog up the list."
Hey, that's what the list IS. Please clog it up with clay-related posts!
