If any of you want Helmer Kaolin, call me for a list of dealers who might be
in your area. In the Texas region, the nearest supplier is in Baton Rouge ,
LA.

Hello Michael Wendt and anyone else who is interested;
I'm going to be firing my anagama kiln later this month. A friend of
mine was in Montana and picked up a bag of Helmer Kaolin. I'd like to
make a slip with it that would work well in the firing. Got any slips
that you would like to share, maybe even a claybody that uses Helmer as
the main player.

Dear Craig;

Around the East Creek Anagama, folks like to use a flashing slip of 80
Helmer, 20 Neph Sye. Replace any kaolin in your clay recipes with
Helmer for a start there. My idea of a great woodfire body would be 35
Helmer, 30 ball, 15 Jordan, and 20 G 200. YMMV.

Cheers, Hank

Hi Craig,

I've been experimenting with the Helmer and have gotten some great
colors with this slip;

Helmer 80

Nepheline Syenite 20

For use on bisque I calcined half of the clay.

It makes some very firey reds in some places in the kiln. Where there is
heavy ash deposited, it turns dark brown.

I hope your firing goes well, ours (#9) was the best yet I think. I'm
still looking at the pots and trying to absorb as much as possible
before they sell.

Good firings,

15 Jordan? Really? Where are you getting Jordan clay?

I have been working with a Helmer Kaolin Porcelain with the following
recipe:

Helmer Porcelain cone 10

G-200 Feldspar 25
Helmer Kaolin 50
XX Sagger 10
Silica 15

Bentonite 2

The Helmer Kaolin Porcelain is very similar to a Porcelain, using =
Grolleg
Kaolin, I use, but the Helmer has better flashing. I recommend the =
Helmer
Kaolin and plan to use more of it. Michael Wendt's delivery system is a
very interesting idea. I, for one, will be interested in how this works
out. My concerns are the winter shipping with the freezing and how the
Postal Service will continue with the fix rate boxes. I had a good =
supply
of my Helmer Porcelain mixed up so I did not try his recipe, yet.

For my purposes, this porcelain throws very well and I like the looks it
from the wood fired kiln.

My question of the day is if anyone has tried the Helmer Kaolin in a =
cone 6
recipe. Could anyone share their recipe and results? =20

While waiting for a resolution to the Thorley shelves situation for my =
wood
kiln, I fired up the last of the cone 6 porcelain I had around in my =
good
old paragon electric. My husband, who is the official glazer, liked the
results so much that he wants more cone 6, so I am thinking of trying =
out
the Helmer Kaolin in a cone 6 recipe if somebody has one.

Thanks,
Julene, enjoying Spring in Wisconsin. Wondering if my horse, who =
adventured
to Minnesota last summer on her own, is going to give us another horse,
soon. Using a different computer as my usual one is permanently on =
strike
with all my e-mail addresses, so if this does not come through right, =
that
is my story and I am sticking to it. =20
