Actually it used to be better to leave computers on because they failed more
during boot up and shut down. But not anymore. There is no reliability
benefit to running computers all the time anymore, and you are wasting
power. When I was responsible for 500 computers we made people turn them
off every night and saved tons of money. Hopefully at least you have your
computer running in low power mode when you haven't used it for a while.
All computers have this option now but many people don't know how to turn it
on.
Your point about server computers is not incorrect, a computer certainly can
run all the time, but servers probably aren't a great example because they
use more expensive parts in them, and they are usually upgraded every year
or so their lifespan as servers is short. Usually the most compelling
reason to leave a computer on is if you have a backup system running at
night.
Gee, I sound like an engineer. I'll make sure I stop posting things like
this!
