Randy, I don't think there is a "best" one. I've said several times before
on this subject that it depends on what you want your program and your
glazes to do, and how you think about and use glazes. Check the archives
for those reviews.
But I will say that, since several people have mentioned Glazemaster, and I
don't think it had come out yet when I last went into this subject in great
detail, that it is among the best. However, I have not had time to play
with the new version, so my opinion may be outdated.
I once did a discussion group at NCECA (also before Glazemaster) about using
programs, and two things were agreed on by all the participants. One was
that almost everybody likes best that program they started with. And
second, that any program was better than no program, when it came to
understanding what was going on in your glazes.

Randy, if you are using ^6 oxidation, I would recommend GlazeMaster. Check
with John Hesselberth at www.frogpondpottery.com.

Otherwise, I like Insight a lot.

In a way it is a funny question with a funny answer.
If I own a Ford -car and happy and you would ask me which is the best
car, I would almost force you to buy a Ford!
Here it is a bit more complicated. We know the "factory managers" and
see them as closed friends, though we never (in my case) met them.
Each program has it's + and - . I work mostly in Matrix and cannot
believe that any other program can be as comprehensive, yet some times
cannot be without Insight.
Other people might use Insight because it suits their needs
. I know one glaze guru that gives courses to use it.
I never drove the Glaze Mater but I know the creator - it must be good.
So is David Hewitt that helps me so many times to discover my local
materials analysis. David is a very important theoretician writer (
which is the reality) in the UK.

I have used HyperGlaze, have tried Insight, have considered Matrix but
finally decided upon GlazeMaster.

GlazeMaster works hand-in-glove with the book Mastering Cone 6 Glazes
(by John Hesselberth and Ron Roy) and is especially great for the
beginner (easy on the pocket book, too).

I am fairly new to trying to understand glazes. With the book and the
program in tow I was able to create two new glazes, both of which I
like very much. I had tried doing this with other programs and got
lost or stuck along the way.

With GlazeMaster and the accompanying User's Manual, I was able to
complete the whole process and when I was done I was shocked to find
that it wasn't that I "couldn't" do it, it was that I needed the right
tool.

It's that grey gooey stuff floating around in your noggin.

All the software programs are going to do is just make
it easier and maybe faster.

Of course, by making it easier and faster you may be
more prone to investigate further which will add more
structure to that grey gooey stuff.

I love GlazeChem (www.glazechem.com). I have used it for a couple of
years. It couldn't be easier or more flexible. Only $35.00

Richard Burkett's HyperGlaze - without question. This
is why I bought a Mac and it's one of the best
decision I ever made. I wouldn't be without it and I'm
still running a version from 1992! (OK I just ordered
a new one.) He may have a version for Windows, I do
not know.

Especially if you are a student - it incl. lots of
teaching lessons.

As Karen says - Hyper Glaze is only for the Mac. You might check with
Richard Burket to see if it's going to be compatible with Mac OS 10.

When buying calculation software - customer support is valuable - asking
the right question is sometimes the difference between getting the best for
your needs.

Ron is right!
Both Tony Hansen and Lawrence Ewing are giving great support.
So was Fraser Forsythe except that he did not understand my poor pottery
English that time.
I found a bug in the Glaze Simulator version one and Fraser sent me a
new CD.
Tony's ear always listened to my questions about Insight and about
"weird" materials like this one: R.I.O.
Or this one: KNaO
While Lawrence explained about Matrix and on line the logical and
practical way of making line blends.

Dear Frank,
You are a great guy, a fabulous artist, and have been helpful to me...so
how can I break this to you? There isn't any best glaze calc software. :-)
I don't know of a program that will not let you create a glaze from
scratch. I do that in Insight, which I have found to be easy to use, and
extremely satisfactory. I am working with GlazeMaster right now, and am
finding that it's easy to learn also. It is more mouse oriented than
Insight. I use it on a PC, but it is supposed to run on a Mac also.
HyperGlaze is, unfortunately, getting dated in that it was written for
an older operating system than most Mac's use today.
Paul Lewing has said it more than once and he's right, the best glaze
calculation program is the one you have learned to use.
Good glazing,
Dave Finkelnburg

Karen,
I really enjoyed my version of Hyper Glaze but alas we use PC's at work now
and I really miss it.
The ability to create a glaze from scratch was worth the price alone.
Plus, it is very user friendly.
Does anyone know of a glaze program that will let you create a glaze from
scratch and run on a PC?

I tried the 'Insight' program and found it to be very user unfriendly. IMHO

Any feedback anyone?

I find GlazeChem (PC) and GlazeMaster (MAC & PC) to both be to be very
capable and user friendly.
