I'm new to these type of glazes and can't find answers to these questions
from the information I have. I've mixed up 6 trials. I'm trying these at
cone 6.
If I don't put any colorant in, will I have a nice clear glaze and still be
able to see the crystals?
With the zinc present in these tests, the only colorants mentioned for use
are nickel and copper. Could I use cobalt? Are small % of stains ever used
with crystals?
Would I use these at approximately the same thickness as my other glazes
which I usually dip pieces in?
Thank you all!
Kim Marie

Hello Marie
There is always the first time.
NO.
It is completely a different story.
I want to encourage you so I will write you some hints.
A young (potter) told me recently her find had asked for my recipe "with
the flowers".
This is glazing is the one you cannot do without learning.
I want to offer you to buy/read Fara Shimbo's book, the new edition.
http://digitalfire.com/books/518.php
From another book I learned to make this and that thick. I giggled and
asked the book cover? Why do I get them best were they are thin?
I send you to this book because it is written clearly without arrogance
and without letting you feel that you know nothing.
I invite you also to Fara Shimbo's list of crystal glazing:
http://crystalline-ceramics.info/bbs/index.cgi
that completes clayart in this case.
Simply and simplified without competing Fara I shall say it.
It is like having two glazes at one.
The best example: You add to your base 1 or the way I do 2% nickel
oxide.
You have the background, which has a lot of sodium some zinc and silica
(may be lithium too)- the glaze is yellow or yellow brown. The crystals,
the other glaze is rich with zinc. Zinc colorizes the nickel in blue.
See here.

If it does not open
Go here:

In this case you can see what the add of some 1-2 titanium can do
(Slide 11)
About clear. I was not so exited. All this work and to see it only whan
you put it lear a light source!
The blue:
The simple way, no more than 0.5 cobalt oxide otherwise the background
and the crystals will have the same strength.
I add here a recipe I made out of one of mines, to make you (folks)
Unles you are (fox:-) ) be able to make mine in your materials.
The pictures I send you to will show you the best way how the glaze
looks differet on differet claybodies and the difference between
horizontal and vertical

all.

Because we have differet kilns we shall have differece result.
Keep testing.
