How do you explain the updraft. It evidently does exist. There are two
volumes of air: the one inside and the one outside. When you open the
attic, the volume of air inside becomes composed of the combined volumes
of the attic and the downstairs. Because of the heat the air in the
attic is less dense than the air downstairs. The outside air pushes
down on the air in the house and forces it out the roof vent. Or to be
more correct: The air in the attic being warmer and less dense exerts
less pressure on the air in the rest of the house and it (the house air)
expands into that space (the attic).
