I got the idea of making cones from reading Harry Davis' book,
"The Potter's Alternative". It was a good exercise in learning
to work with molecular formulae and glaze calculation to develop
recipes for different cone numbers.
It is also a good exercise to learn what different ceramic materials
really do.
Anything you can do for yourself is, in my opinion, empowering
and worthwhile. That said, I must admit, now that I know I can
do it, I bought, rather than made, my last batch of cones.
At the NCECA Conference a few years ago, I spoke on why it is
worthwhile to make your own tools. I called it "The Three E's of
Making Tools". The "3 E's" are education, economy, and expression,
and if you want to read the essay it is on my website at
http://www.farmpots.com/pub.htm
It is the last essay, at the bottom of the page.

To go along with the directions for cone molds in Davis' book,
Glazechem http://www.glazechem.com/ has the analysis for Seger
cones in its database, if anybody is interested in making your own.

I got analysis of ^6 and tried to make one. It was very hard because I
did not have enough clay in the recipe.
