Does anyone have a good credit card processing company that they can
recommend for phone orders? I am in California.
Thanks
Adam

I switched over to Costco credit card processing which is by Nova. It is
inexpensive and easy. You have to buy a terminal (around $500) but the fees are so
much cheaper that my savings will pay for the terminal in one year.

Try http://mcvisa.com. I've had them for several years with good
results. They specialize in small craft business'.

Lots of posts about credit card processing recently. We stopped doing shows
about a year ago but at that time our card sales were about 65%. WE went
through the knuckle buster, calling in for approvals and finally ended up
with a bag phone, data converter and a credit card machine with printer. If
you do many shows and if you are busy at the show the electronic setup is
well worth it. If you can get analog cellular service in your location I
have a deal for you for the bag phone and converter. I also have a couple
knuckle busters that I will give away if you pay the shipping. Call 281-298-
6562 or email osborne@ev1.net.

I have been following this thread with great interest -- started doing
shows a year ago
and have not yet invested in a credit card processing system. Think
about it often but
as of yet don't think the expense/hassle is worth the return for me.
Doing less than ten
shows per year and at this point most of my pieces are smaller items
that I sell for less
than $50, with a smaller percentage of larger items that are still under
$100. Have sold
lots of my pottery -- all to people who paid with cash or checks. Only
"lost" one or two
sales in the last year (on items that were fairly low priced anyway) to
people who only
had credit cards but ultimately sold the pieces to other customers
anyway.
Recently got input from another potter who lets customers without
cash/checks take the piece
and send the check later (as others have mentioned on this list) so did
that with one customer
at my last show -- and got the check in the mail right away along with
an appreciative note.
I've even had two customers at two separate shows who only had credit
cards (before I knew
about the take home, pay later approach) who on their own initiative ran
off to money machines
and came back with cash (not something I suggested or asked them to do)
to buy something
from me. So far no bad checks either.
So I think it depends on where you live and do shows (I am in Michigan),
how many shows
you do per year, the type of shows you do (i.e., huge Ann Arbor Summer
Art Fair vs. small Ann
Arbor Sunday Artisans Market), and the average price of your pieces
(i.e. $35 vs $350). I think
that when I start doing lots of bigger shows and making/selling lots of
higher priced items (I hope!),
then maybe I will invest in a credit card processing system, but for
now, the cash/check and occasional
take now/pay later method for works for me.
Thanks!
Dorie (in Ann Arbor, Michigan, busy gearing up for the Plymouth Art in
the Park Fair!)

Hi,
I would like to know if anyone has had experience with using Mobile Artisans
and Crafters National Co-Op for credit card processing. They have their ad
in Sunshine Artist magazine.
There seems to be plenty of Merchase Services to choose from. Anyone have a
recommendation for credit card processing at art festivals?

Mike and others ...
There is another craft forum that has more members
who are on the large craft show circuit and they would
be able to give you a lot of feedback in this area.
It is the American Craft Forum
http://www.americancraftforum.com./
Joining is free and I think it is promoted by the Rosen Group.
The group I recommend for credit card processing for artists is
Arts & Crafts Business Solutions ( also known as TeaMac)
1-800-873-1192
I have never heard a bad thing about them and if they
cannot help you they will recommend someone who can.
I have no connection with them and unfortunately cannot
use them until my current contract runs out !!
Good Luck

Hi Folks,
Since the archives are down, I have to ask...
I am looking for a low-cost credit card processing company
that is suitable for low-volume, seasonal/sporadic usage.
I do art shows 5-6 times a year, plus occasional home
sales, so activity would be infrequent and batchy.
I have found 2 options so far that look promising,
as well as the Potters Council offering.
The first is Propay.com.
They have plans as low as $35/year and 3.50% + $0.35
per transaction, with Internet-based processing/approval
(no machine needed) and no monthly minimums.
But it is limited to $250/transaction and $1000/month.
For $60/year, you get 3.25% + $0.35 per transaction,
phone-based processing/approval in addition,
and higher per-transaction/per-month limits ($500/tx and
$3000/month).
Another option is PaynetSystems.com.
For $39 1-time setup + $8/month ($96/year), you get
2.29% + $0.25 per transaction, with phone processing.
So first, does anyone have any other recommendations
for companies to consider for this kind of usage?
Second, does anyone have any experiences to share on
these 2 companies or the Potters Council service?
Thanks in advance!

Lauren - I signed up for the Potters' Council vendor last Spring. (The vendor is ChasePaymentech.) My sales are definitely part-time and seasonal and this works for me. $3.50/month plus .10 transaction fee. % is 2.43% for Visa/MasterCard; others are higher.
There are several options for processing and for terminal. I have been satisfied with them and we are even considering a "shared" terminal for our guild.
And when you call them, you get a live person who is - usually - very helpful.

I am not familiar with what potter's council has to offer.
I am using the waysystems that I purchased thru http://2cpusa.com
It is a wireless device as small as a cellphone, swipe the card and
authorize, small printer too.
The equip cost me 295.oo and I pay total 26 mnth for access and statement
fee.
no minimum.
transactions are 1.95% plus .18c each. reward cards are a bit higher but
under 3%. still 18c ea.
If there is no service it stores the info to upload later and reconcile.
...still prints a receipt for each sale.
I like the immediate authorization.
It takes a bit of fussing with to get used to (for me anyway) but I am
real happy with it now.

thanks to all who responded on-line and off.
i've decided to go with propay for now because
i have a looming deadline of a home show in nov.
and propay can get me up and running by then.
i would prefer to use the potters council service
but i'm still waiting for a return phone call and it
appears the time to process the application would put me
beyond my now urgent need!
it's funny, after 10 years of selling and never feeling a
real need for a credit card service, suddenly, the last
2 shows i was in outside my home made it apparent how necessary
it is, so now the rush is on to get a service!
thanks again,
lauren

Some of you may recall that I complained rather bitterly about missing
the "fine print" when I signed up with Chase Paymentech through the
Potters Council and was charged $250 for not keeping the account open
for three years. Well, last night I received a very welcome call from
the Potters Council account manager at Paymentech and learned that my
money will be refunded!!!! This is a great relief.
I want to personally and publicly thank Carolyn Dorr at the Potters
Council for following up on my lament and Jennifer of Paymentech for
spending a significant amount of time in the trenches figuring out
what to do. I am very grateful and happy. This also is testimony to
what we all should know, that is the value of community and community
organizations! Hurrah for the Potters Council!

I know this has been talked about recently, but I've been searching
the archives and I can't find the thread. If someone remembers what
it was called at the time, I'd love to go back and read that instead
of making everybody write in again.
The company I take credit cards through, Chase Paymentech, has just
informed me that, in months that I do not take any credit card
transactions, they are going to raise my fee from $3.50 a month to $25
a month. I had 4 months last year when I took no credit card sales at
all, and only one where I would have paid them enough to cover the
$25. Since I don't feel that a 700% increase in a fee for doing
nothing is quite fair, I'd like to change processing companies. I
started with this one because the big bank I was dealing with before
was gouging me like this. This, by the way, was the deal through
Potters Council.
I know about PayPal. It's $30 a month and if you know what months
you're going to be using it, and only pay for that, it's a good deal.
But I never know when I'm going to need it. Usually those people
would mail me a check but not always. So I need it all the time. I
also know about Square, a cell phone and ipad app. But I don't have
one of those and paying for one and a data line would be as expensive
as Chase.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,

I'm very happy with propay.com. It's pretty much the same as Square,

Same thing for me, Paul. I called CP and of course they were no help. I cal=
led Potters Council because I can't imagine they know this and are still of=
fering the plan. Carolyn Dorr of PC called me and referred me to a particul=
ar person at Chase, but that person, of course, has not returned my call.
As soon as I talk to Chase again I plan to call Potters Council again and e=
mphasize that this is a ridiculous increase and they might consider finding=
another company to represent them.
And then I will cancel my Chase account (but am afraid they will somehow fi=
nd a way to extract $$ from me for the cancellation as well).
So, I'd like to find that thread again too.

Hi Paul,
Sorry to hear the bad news. I too use Paymentech for my home studio.
I haven't had a credit card sale in a few months. So far, I haven't heard
from them
I know that Costco has a credit card program with low monthly fees.
I am going to look at what they offer. The studio I am affiliated with
uses Costco and our book keeper seems happy with the interest rate.
