Tia,

Take a look at this web site. You may have already seen it, but it was o=
f=20
interest to me when I was researching some of the earliest known fired cl=
ay=20
work: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jomon=20

Also, check out books in your local library and ceramic supply store of=20
Northern New Mexico Pueblo Potters. There is a wealth of information abo=
ut=20
these potters from Santa Clara, Santo Domingo, Jemez, San Ildefanso, Taos=
, to=20
name a few.

Thanks Lee,

I enjoyed the web links. I Particularly enjoyed Jared Diamond's article.=
He=20
is a great research historian and writer. Have you read his book "Guns,=20
Germs, and Steel"? I don't think the title does the book justice, but th=
e=20
book is great.

You might find my web page interesting (sorry not all the links are
currently working):

http://geocities.com/akitajin/jomon.html

These two might be of interest to you specifically:

History of Jomon Japan: http://www.geocities.com/akitajin/jprt.html

Were the First American's Jomon?

Thank you Marc for the book recommendation. I have appreciated
everything I have read by Jared. Right now, I am reading Cooper's
biography of Bernard Leach. After that, I should read a historical
novel on Sakamoto Ryoma I started a while back (Ryoma was an important
figure in the modernization of Japan and the Meiji restoration) but when
I am done with these, I will check out "Guns, Germs, and Steel." I
think that anything that would dissuade Americans from believing in
"Manifest Destiny" is a good idea. The luck of place (geography),
resources and timing are so important.
