I wish more instructors would! I only learned about safety from this list &
books. My instructors have never mentioned a word about gloves or respirators
(except the current one). I shudder at all the dry dusting we had to do in
my last class. Dry dusting the studio & table tops, near our faces! Mixing
raku glazes with our faces practically in the buckets. We were even doing
raku, a bunch of inexperienced people all pulling from 2 kilns at 1 time with the
nearest fire extinguisher being almost a full building away! I am stunned &
amazed at the total disregard for safety that most of my instructors have had.
It's one thing to disregard your own safety, that's your choice, but if you
are teaching, I think it's incumbent upon you to at least discuss the common
safety rules & allow people to make their own decision about whether to follow
them or not.

About gloves for glazing...do most of you simply use latex gloves? Are those
adequate? Or should I be using chemical resistant gloves that I see for sale
at industrial supply sites & even Home Depot?

Simona in CO where we had a 76 degree last day of winter :-)

Simone

I use the rubber blue ones you find in the cleaning section of Home Depot. I like em long so I can
get my hand to the bottom, plus they are very sexy! But I tell you those deep fry screen paddles
work great and they are cheap cheap cheap! The paddle is about 5-6" square and it mixes the glaze
wonderfully w/o even touching it.
