we cannot do much about anything with the harvest boys.
they have the archives already, yahoo, escribe, and others.all.
they have it now, so why lock the door?
all we can do is try and stop the spam.
get filters in place.
carry on.
or, get a permit to carry a gun.
we sure hate those buggers.

if this does not do the job
in the next few months, we will
visit and see about locking us up.

There is a very good reason to lock the door, in the form
of disguising all Email addresses in the present and future
archives: It not only prevents new harvests of the existing
addresses, but more importantly it allows Clayarters who are
willing to change addresses to be protected from future
harvests.
Privatizing would not change the fact that the spammers already
have the present addresses; everyone would still have to change
addresses to be protected with a privatized archive.
Disguising addresses (called "mungeing") doesn't need to be
difficult. There are generalized text processing utilities
like "grep" that could search through and find the names,
just like the harvesters do, and replace them with
munged versions that can still be read by humans, but
not by machines. (Reversing strings, replacing @ characters
and other Email clues, etc.)
If this is done, there is no need to privatize.
(Assuming the Listserv is configured to block
direct access to the subscriber list.)
If it is not done, privatizing won't help.
I'd be glad to donate my programming efforts to help
set this up.
