Wow, it sure sounds like fun. But then it always does and I always think that
perhaps next year I will make it to NCECA. I really will make it one of these
days.

BACKGROUND
What did I do on spring break? I took tests for two correspondence courses I
am taking - nursing school prerequisites. I took my last test for the
Nutrition course on Friday. YEA!

Some of you know that almost two years ago, I was laid off. I was a
consultant and the layoff was due to the economic downturn. Of course, the fact that I
had custody of two of my grandchildren (they lived with me for a year)
factored into when I was laid off. Had I not had my grandchildren, I would have been
laid off a few months later. Having them live with me was well worth it.

I grew up in a blue collar family and dropped out of high school to get
married and have a baby. I went to college later than usual, but believed that
education would ensure that I was always employable. My education included
getting an MBA from one of the top business schools in the country. But, I
discovered I was wrong. In my mid-fifties, armed with an MBA and many years of business
experience, I was unable to find a job.

So, last year, I reevaluated my life and where I was going and decided a good
place to go was into nursing. I sold my house in paradise (sunny Redondo
Beach, CA) and moved. Since September, I have been taking nursing school
prerequisites. I took the first few courses via the internet & correspondence. Now I am
in school full time taking human anatomy, microbiology, and human physiology.
I have a BA in biology, but never used biology in my worklife and haven't
had a biology course in more than 30 years. Some of the things I am learning
about now weren't even discovered when I last took a bio course. It's really fun!

THE GOOD NEWS
Now for what else happened last week -
I have been accepted by 3 nursing schools (and expect to hear from a couple
more). I'm so excited. I'M GOING TO BE A NURSE. Most of the programs I applied
to are accelerated programs for folks who already have a BA, but who are not
nurses. I can earn a BSN (bachelor of science in nursing) in about a year. By
the time I start school, I will be 57. This old dog is going to learn some new
tricks and a new profession.

Just wanted to share and thank to all the folks who have supported me along
the way both directly and indirectly.
