I've been a clayart 'lurker' for at least a million years it seems, =
so even though you all seem like good close friends -- you've not met me =
-yet. I'm the typical 'come to clay late'(40's) garage-studio parttime =
potter.' My love affair with clay has had it's ups and downs. And my =
biggest challenge is being happy with the results of oxidation firing. =
(Yes - I have Ron & John's book.) So I signed-up and got into Richard =
Burkett & Lana Wilson's--Ceramic Surfaces: Kitchen to Calculation =
workshop at Penland this summer. I'm thrilled, but wonder if anyone =
else from Clayart is attending (July 25-August 10) and I just want some =
feedback on attending workshops at Penland. Thanks.

Judy,
You will think you've died and gone to heaven! I went several years ago at
a "mature" age. I knew nothing about clay other than how to center and
throw a little: a real newbie. Had the wonderful fortune of taking classes
with David Shaner, Chuck Hindes, and Ben Owen. Ben took us on a studio tour
of NC potters. I met Will Ruggles and Douglas Rankin, Cynthia Bringle, and
many, many more. What an honor! Came home with lots of pots.
I fell deliriously in love with clay and the potters I met. Everyone at
Penland was so kind and willing to share their knowledge - with me, a
beginner. The studios are open at night and you can wander in and talk to
other artists. I've never been to NCECA, but when I read everyone's stories
it sounds like what I experienced at Penland.
The setting is beautiful. The food is good. Have a wonderful, wonderful
time. Carol Baker
