pinholing and old mine 4

My name is Jessa Lale and I am a Senior at Alpena High School. My science
fair project this year involves replacing Arkansas native clays for the
ball clay Old Mine 4. I am looking for potters who use Old Mine 4 in their
clay recipe and have been having trouble with pinholing. I am trying to
describe how widespread this problem may be. If you possibly know of anyone
who has had this problem I would love to know. I would greatly appreciate
your help.
Thanks again

I replaced OM4 in all of my glazes and two clay suppliers (one in Texas,
one in Michigan) also replaced the OM4 in the clay because of pinholing.

Hi Jessa,

I don't think the OM#4 is the problem - it could be your bisque firing,
glaze firing and/or the glaze itself.

First make sure your bisque firing is slow enough from 700C up and there is
plenty of oxygen present to help burn out the impurities in your clay body.

If refiring still produces pinholes it's probably the bisque firing - if
they go away in a refire it's the glaze or the glaze firing. Try a soak at
the end or reform your glaze to melt more.

yes. I haven't had a problem since. If you are still getting your clay
from Armadillo tell him you want the new formula. He also told me there
is no Plastic Vitrox in any of his clays. Doesn't know where that came
from. You might see a slight shift in color.

I haven't either, but I felt it was due to my firing about a cone lower.
Must be
getting the new formula - have seen a shift in color, but no pinholing now.
Thanks, Cheryl

Kathi,
Did this solve the "glaze mystery" pinhole problem you
were experiencing a few months ago?
