bluebird pugmill vacuum pump problem

Howdy,

I bought a used (about 10 years old) pugmill. The vacuum pump seems
to be gone. Even after cleaning it thoroughly, I couldn't get it to
pull much, if any, vacuum under load.

Grainger doesn't list it, nor could I find the model anywhere on the
web (Thomas 905BA23-018).

I borrowed a larger (1/3 hp vs. 1/10 hp) pump and it works great. I
can dial the vacuum to the suggested 22" Hg.

Grainger and Bluebird are closed for the weekend, but I'd love your
opinion about whether more is more, or should I stick with the 1/10
hp design spec?

Thanks.

Regards,
Maurice

Dear Maurice;

Vacuum pumps, like compressors (which they mirror), wear out and pull
smaller and smaller vacuums just as compressors create less and less
pressure. It is possible that your original pump needs rebuilding or
replacement. You might have it tested before doing so to confirm this
diagnosis.

Cheers, Hank

Hi, Hank,

Thanks for your help.

I'm ready to give up on this pump; I need the pugmill working more
than I need another project. The new one works like a charm and a
replacement seems to be a couple to a few hundred bucks.

But I was wondering whether it would make sense to go for a larger
one, or if that would be a problem; I was thinking of a 1/3 or even
1/2 horse motor, but didn't want to buy a problem.

This 1/10 hp jobbie is a diaphragm type and, as you likely know,
quite noisy. It's not something that I'll run for hours each day,
but I wouldn't mind spending a hundred more for a vane jobbie,
especially if it were to last longer.

Thanks again.

Regards,
Maurice

I also had a 10 yr old Bluebird pugmill with low
vacuum. I called Bluebird, got the phone number and
address of the manufacturer in Wisconsin and bought a
rebuild kit. The rep on the phone was very helpful
and it was easy to do the rebuild. Vacuum went up
significantly.

Am not in the studio, so will root around to find my
paperwork so I can send address/contact info to you,
if I have it.

Mitch
