I have a quick glaze question. If I change the frit in
your Glossy Base 1 to frit 3124 and lower the talc to 5% and add 6%
whiting to make up for lowering the talc-will it make the glaze unstable?
_Thank you Marilu

Hi Marilu,

It's hard to say without testing. You have raised the alumina and the
silica while reducing the boron. You have also substituted calcium for
some of the magnesium. This glaze will probably not melt as easily as
the original. It should be pretty stable if you get if fully melted
during firing, but will that be cone 6 or 7 or 8? I don't know.

Regards,

John

Hello John, I was planning on firing it to cone 6.
The changes were recommended by mason stains to
get the recipe to work with their stains. Do you
have a better suggestion as to what to do so
their stains will work?-I have your book. They said
the recipes all had too much boron. I was not
planning to use the stains on the part of functional
ware that people would eat off but I was hoping to be
able to use the recipe they recommended with
other colorants or just leave it clear on the
parts people would be eating from. Thanks for
any help.-Marilu

Hi Marilu,

I have very little experience working with Mason stains. A few
experiments and some vinegar testing should tell you if there is a
problem or not.
