gold coloured raku glaze

updated thu 1 apr 04

I use a gold raku glaze a lot. This is it:

Gerstley Borate 80
Neph Sey 20
Silver Nitrate 2
Tin Ox ? only a bit

Sorry to not remember the Tin percentage. It is late and I am not well,
and can not hike to the studio tonight to grab the glaze file. It is maybe
2 or 3 percent, like in many other glazes for raku to opacify a bit.

This gold glaze is like another posters earlier, mettalic gold with hard
reduction, beautiful honey/taffy/yellow with lighter reduction. Do it
right and it can be a very lovely antique cream with nice crackle.

It should be mentioned that the fumes from the fireing are somewhat toxic.
Do not breathe the kiln fumes. And yes, silver nitrate staines the clothes
or skin. Also the glaze is supposed to be light sensitive, though I have
never had a problem in bucket. I mix it several gallons at a time. It
keeps just fine. You may see some samples here:

I'm sorry to not have replied to the list sooner. I thought I had replied to
Les off list, but apprently not, since I have received so many requests for the
recipe and pictures. I was about to send it last night, but my computer
broke. I think my hard drive is gone.

The recipe I have is from Steve Branfmans book, Raku, a Practical Approach. or
as I have titled it, "My Raku Bible". The recipe is from Robert Piepenburg.

Gerstly Borate 80
Cornwall Stone 20
Tin oxide 1
Silver Nitrate 2

I made up the glaze, just like the recipe says, no changes. Do wear gloves,
and don't spill on anything. It stains black that does not come off (for
example, the work table on your creative industries wheel)

I have some really nice pictures, but I don't have a website, that is why I was
asked les if he wanted to see some.

Since my computer crashed, I haven't got the postings from yesterday, so I
don't know if this reply is redundant. Hope not!

From Celia in northern Minnessota, where the sun is so bright today, it may
melt the ice in the
driveway!

Got it... and thanks a million.
