randy's red without gerstley borate

updated fri 2 apr 04

Does anyone more organised than I still have the recipe for randy's red without using gerstley borate? I know it was discussed here a few years ago when the gerstley borate problems were at their height, but I have searched the archives without success, nor can I find it in my own notes. I think it was a Ron Roy formulation? I can't remember whether cadycal or a frit were substituted, or even if it was satisfactory at all. So if anyone wouldn't mind posting it or replying direct I'd be very grateful.

Hi Frances,

I have scoured my hard drive and only came up with the original. I usually
did not keep any of those revisions I did - unless someone reported back
that they were good.

I seem to remember that my revision was good but I have no record.

Anyway I did it again - different this time - maybe better. By the way it
can't be done with Cady Cal - too much CaO.

If you try this please let me know if it works - and send me back the
recipe so I can save it - thanks!

Don't use it without the red iron as it will have too low an expansion.

Frit 3134 - 22.5
Frit 3195 - 19.0
Talc - 20.0
F4 - 5.0
EPK - 10.0
Silica - 23.5
Total - 100.0

Red iron oxide - 15.0

Looks like this is not going to do very well in a dishwasher - and you
better at least do the lemon test if you are going to use it as a liner on
functional ware.
