It slakes down more completely and evenly if
it's bone-dry. Damp scraps, oddly enough, don't
rehydrate as readily as bone-dry ones, and
often stay lumpier unless thoroughly wedged.
The smoother and less groggy the clay, the more
this seems to hold true. (Same reason why
raw-glazing works better on slightly damp clay
than on fully dried work - less absorption.)
