Surfing with Helen Bates - Sites from Australia Japan and Israel - March
31st., 2004

Hello folks, I'm still officially "offline" but reading clayart from the
Acers archives. :-)

Over the next while I'll be playing "catch-up" with sites I've collected
but not had time to send you. Here are a few for a start...

Peter Accadia (Resident potter, Student Union, Latrobe U., Australia)

Accadia has a strong experimental outlook in the glazing of his
work. He may fire it using gas, wood, or both, and he uses the saggar
fire technique often. His functional pots are drop-dead gorgeous, his
forms always balanced as to colour and form. Priced like the glass
artists' work, these pots may be functional, . ($200 - $1500+ AUS) (No,
I lie... I found some slim vases at $150, and his teapots, which are
some of the best representatives I have seen of the marriage of form and
function run from a relatively modest $120 to $250.)

Super-stretchy ceramic breaks mould (news from Japan)

"A ceramic devised in Japan can be rapidly stretched to ten times its
initial length and retain its new shape." (Nature magazine)

Rosser, Carol and Arther (Dalrymple Heights, QLD, Australia)

Anagama and woodfire saltglaze potters Carol and Arthur
Rosser... There are a few nice pieces by both potters on the site.
External links to the Arthur Rosser's "Sidestoke" woodfirers site
promise a view of more of the couple's work. (The Sidestroke.com
web site has been offline several times latterly,
so you may have to reserve your visit there for another day... )

Mark Yudel (Pardes Chana,Israel)

Yudel makes raku fired sculpture, tile art and murals. His specialty is
fantasy sculptural animal characters. (The site loads javascript but
I'm not sure it's needed to view, as I was able to exit the javascript
applet and still move around the site.)

Israeli Potters' Forum (Hebrew Language)

The forum is hosted on his site by Israel Shmueli.
(Thanks to Ababi Sharon's sig. file for this link)

Israel Shmueli (Botz Pottery) (Petah Tiqva, Israel)
(English and Hebrew)
Shmueli makes wheel thrown and hand built ceramic sinks of high fired
stoneware (1230 c.) He also makes thrown and hand built teapots, mugs,
jugs, lidded containers and other functional pieces, of colourfully
glazed stoneware. One of his teapots seems to have a handle cut from an
old umbrella handle and attached with wire to the lugs of the pot.

BTW, 'twas very nice to meet so many of you at NCECA, and to get Mel's
teabowl was the icing on the cake!

I hope to get to another conference, if not next year, then soon...
