screaming at the shimpo whisper

Well, the Whisper splash pan is bigger than the Pacifica. It handles a
16 inch bat plus finger room, which the Pacifica barely does. The table
is inadequate, but most aren't much better. I get those 2'/3' precut
formica bathroom sink counters from my local cabinet guy. He always
seems to have a few kicking around to give away: order mistakes I
guess. I cut a half moon in the front to fit around the splash pan.
Most of it rests on the wheel's table and I make a set of legs for the
back, or rest it on some crates. Nice cleanable work surface with room
for all my stuff...

I just love being able to turn down my radio, and am imagining the bird
sounds out my window will be a treat! Of course we're still in that
weird northern purgatory called April.....not many birds yet, although
the robins are returning....

Birdhouses are my spring project...

When shimpo was developing the Whisper my clay supplier who sold his kiln
company to Shimpo was asked to poll potters for advice on the new wheel. My
advice- a large table, potter friendly splash pan, bat pins that would allow
the use of small bats (one pin dead center and one off 2" to the side) and
of course a sporty new paint job that would include the Canadian flag.. Well
I just used the Whisper at a workshop this weekend
The Whisper was quiet, but that's it. Nothing I would trade in for. Small
table not even big enough for a water bucket, can't put a large bat on with
the splash pan in place. I much prefer the Pacifica- great pedal, quiet
except perhaps at full bore which I never get to.
the Soldner wheel was designed by a potter and i guess it has never really
been matched. You'd have thought they would copy the layout of that wheel
and put the new Whisper guts in it.
I have a great young thrower in my class. chinese kid 6'5". Said he hated
the Whisper cause he couldn't hear the heartbeat of the wheel.
cheers,
Tony
