Dear Susan;

Draw rings, or draw trials, are coils of clay with the bottoms
flattened somewhat so they may stand in a row behind your spyhole. You
reach in with a rod of steel or stainless steel and withdraw them one
at a time until you are satisfied that the clay has received enough
soda/glaze buildup. In regular gas firings, they may be used to
determine the best temperature for crystal growth. Works a charm.

Cheers, Hank
