what influences one's art/craft? (adelaide paul)

I went to google and typed in Adelaide Paul. It seems like she is a
quite accomplished artist. In 97 there were very good comments on a
presentation that she's made. The few examples of her work that I've
seen, do not suit my taste, but they do stick in my mind.
Not too long ago I've done a presentation at Hinds Community college in
Jackson. (Hope people did not make the same nasty comments! :-) The
theme was "South African art meets American art". While preparing for
that I had to go right through my life to find out who am I. My previous
work was very strongly influenced by my South African heritage, but in
the five years in the USA I went through an immigration process, a 9/11
and many other things of which the most influential a culture
shock.....in particularly here in the South :-) I was surprised to see
how my sub conscience started filling up with my last 5 years of
experience and how that started coming out in my work.
Although many will not benefit from this presentation from Adelaide
Paul, it was important enough to take over at least one third of clayart
postings. That by itself makes this a very significant presentation. The
same counts for the war in Iraque.....many for it, many against it, but
it influence us all.

Antoinette,

I do not understand. Perhaps you could expand on your comments?
Specifically why you equate a large number of posts on the subject to
that making it a significant presentation.

From what I have read it sounds to me like the only significance gained
is that NCECA has been warned they better not let this happen again.

Had the majority of the posts critiqued her Art I might agree with you
but since they didn't I don't understand your viewpoint.

Thank you.

Earl have you ever seen a commercial that you do not like and how it
strikes? Did you ever experience yourself going for that very product on
the commercial that you did not like? Well...see this one like that. I
wish I did see her presentation. Maybe I would not have liked it either,
but it would have had an influence on my life in the one or the other
way. I do not know Adelaide, but if you've seen her work, you will know
she wants to disturb. That is exactly what she achieved.
By the way 25% of all people are traditional moaners and then; how many
people follows others opinions just because they do not have one of
their own? If one cut those away, you will see presentations like this
one again in future. Unfortunately the comments on here are not a
balanced picture of everyone's viewpoint. Probably I should not have
sticked my nose in here, but I do think it is important to get a
balanced "idea" here. Since Clayart is a bible to some people, they need
to know there might be another side to this. Nceca is a professional
institution that caters for everyone and that is how people should see
it.
Regards.

Good analysis Earl! That said from me that can only comment on the
responses from clayarters on this forum. Several other persons made good
comments on how this should be seen. People like John Baymore and Janet
Kaiser are both people that we can learn from.

So, since her performance has generated so many posts
by people who were disturbed by it and if that was
her intent then I would say that her presentation was
_effective_, but I wouldn't say it was _significant_.

Two different words. Two different meanings.
