Well first of all I want to thank everyone who responded, a lot of good
advice. The best seems to be to use a piece of plastic bag to smooth over
the rim. I have also burnished the rims, this seems to take too long. I
know better than using a sponge on the rim (although I understand this is a
common beginners problem, as well as too much water). But I throw with
fairly dry clay, and haven't tried using a sponge to finish a rim for (20)
years. I think most of it is that I am expecting too much out of this
course clay body. I either need to find a Zen approach to this clay (and
let the clay be the clay), find a finer grog body, or back off the grog
altogether. However I am always up for a challenge! Big day tomorrow, as I
am planning to throw for several hours. I am planning to use the plastic
bag method on the rims. I'll let you know how it all turns out.
thanks again,
corey
