Subject: web site help!!!

My web site is up and running but I have a problem. What can you do, =
should you do, need to do, to be picked up by search engines. My son did =
the site but we haven't figured this part out as yet.

Do you have to pay or is there a way to get on the search engines for =
free???

Gene and Latonna -

Two words for you - Meta Tags. Have your son look up how they are written and how they are added to the webpages. Submission to search engines is free, but it takes a while.

This link will take you to the site submission page for Google:
http://www.google.com/addurl.html

Hope this helps.

You have several major problems that have to be fixed to get listed in
most search engines (at least listed where someone can find you).

First, remove the enter page! You might think it looks cute, but most
of your customers don't (they consider it a waste of time) and worse
yet, most search engines put *special* emphasis on the root page of
your web site. Your root page is the "enter page", which has inadequate
text, meta tags, titles, text, and headlines.

Next, there are four major items that influence search page position.
1) The title of the web page, listed in your:

Mud Duck Pottery

Search engines expect to find all major keywords your customers will
use to search for your site in this title. Your title is too short and
doesn't contain many keywords.

2) Meta tags, only a few search engines use meta keywords so don't
waste much time on that (you still need them), but many still display
your meta description as the description of your web site. You don't
have a meta description tag.

3) Page headlines and text. The keywords used by people searching the
web for pottery have to appear numerous times on your opening page.
You need headlines that emphasize your keywords.

4) You need links from other web sites point to your own site. For
Google, these links must come from sites with a Google page rank of at
least 5. So trade links with other potters to boost both parties web
site ratings. The fastest (and easiest) way to get listed in all the
search engines is to get a link from a web site with a Google page
rank of 6 - 7. These high ranked sites get indexed quite often, and
the search engines will follow a link from their site to yours, thus
listing you.

Finally, all this might make it seem like you have to design your web
site for search engines, not your customers. This is unfortunately
true. Paying for search engine inclusion is probably not necessary at
this time.
