copper in glazes: oribe type glazes

I am simply telling all potters who read this list that the Nuka green will
release copper into many foods. If the ware with this glaze is used by
people who don't know the traditional use of those platters - then the
glaze will leach copper into food. Every potter should be aware - which
glazes are more suitable as liner glazes - so they can make more informed
decisions about which glaze goes where. It is part of our craft - to make
pots suitable for the purposes they will be used.

Most potters in this world need to know more about the glazes they are
using - and develop new glazes that suit the purpose of their work.

This discussion started with the thought that all potters should know how
to work with glaze calculation software - so that we may understand more
about our craft and make the changes that will make our ware better.

I know that not all potters will learn to use calculation software - and I
also know that if more do our world of clay will be better off - not only
from a functional stand point but from the esthetic as well.

As for sharing glaze - I share mine all the time. Are the glazes you share
yours? Do you think because you share them they should not be analyzed? Is
there any reason - that if the glazes you share are wanting in some aspect
- that should not be revealed?

You know very well how glazes are used over here - you know very well that
oribe type glazes are often used as liner glazes - you also know they leach
excessive amounts of copper into some foods.

I think all potters need to know this - and decide based on the facts - if
they want to use such glazes on the insides of pots.

Yes it is a "tactic" to make potters think - is it in our own best interest
to use unstable glazes inside functional pots? - is it in the interest of
hand made pottery in general to use glazes that are unfit for food?

Traditions that don't change are doomed - the world changes and we adapt -
well some of us do - it's called progress and some of it is for the better.
The trick is knowing the difference.
