Hi, Ann,
You may want to check and make sure that your electrical outlet is up to =
par. My husband wired our new outlet, we thought everything was okay so =
I fired our new L&L and had the same thing happen because the wiring in =
the garage was wrong, only one wire was not grounded properly. Since he =
hooked the wires up properly, I have had excellent success. Call an =
electrician or someone familiar with kilns specifically. Our favorite =
guy (Runyan Pottery Supply owner) came right to our house to help us =
out. Paul is an angel!
Good luck,
Amy

Hi, Scott and Ann and all,

I recently got an L&L kiln (because Steve Lewicki, bless his
heart, talked me into it at NCECA). Got a 1 phase one because
that's the only power out here in the Armpit of the Rockies.
I asked the electric company if they'd run 3 phase power out
here and they said only if I could get five more neighbors
to sign up otherwise it isn't cost effective for them...

Now realize, the power lines to my neighborhood were put up
in 1955 and have been ignored since then. The insulation is
falling off the wires. Public Service says, "oh, yeah, well,
it's on our list of things to fix." Has been for 20 years,
I'm told. Whenever we have wind or rain or snow, the power
goes out completely. At least it goes out reliably.

Well, anyway, the new kiln came and I must admit that, what
with it being my ninth kiln over the years, it is a beauty.
I'm still digesting all the features. (Heck, I'm still digesting
the idea that a kiln comes -with- features!) Set it up,
stared at the utter gorgeousness of the clean, no-broken-bricks,
no drips, no gouges, lovely virgin kiln ... fired it to break
in the elements, no problem.

So I decided, well, that worked, let's fire it full.

The thing is rolling along, I'm in the house throwing miniatures
on a plastic toy wheel, when suddenly I hear -bloop, bloop,
bloop- from the bathroom...

This is not a sound you want to hear when you have a septic
pump.

What happened was that somewhere around cone 6, the septic
pump came on and that was just enough overload to trip the
breaker to the garage.

So tomorrow the electricians are coming out to run Real Power
to the garage. Hopefully now I'll be able to use the electric
kilns in the summer when the air conditioning is on!

The moral of the story is, I guess, make sure you've got a
lot more power than you actually need -before- you fire
your gorgeous new kiln...
