I am pondering the idea of making my own tiles, both for my kitchen =
floor and countertops. Is it possible to use low fire clay to produce =
durable tiles? Also, I heard of tiles being made from molds. I slip cast =
and was wondering if producing tiles from molds is similar to slip =
casting? Thanks to all for any helpful information!!

Rachel,
I just finished tiling my fireplace mantle with over 60 tiles. Because the
design was intricate, ivy leaves and vines, I needed to make a one piece
mold. It was very easy to make a plaster cast and the tiles came out
perfectly. I forced clay into the mold rolled it with a rolling pin, cut it
flush with the mold using a cutting wire, waited 1.5 hours tapped the mold
upside down and lo and behold a nice tile. I did not have any warping
problems and I'm speculating that that may be due to the fact that the
platelets were randomly distributed instead of aligned as when you press the
clay using a slab roller. I don't know if there is a problem using
earthenware clay, but my question would be the durability of low fire
glazes.
