Dear Friends,
Just opened the kiln to take out two 6*6 test tiles.
Seventy two samples based on Washed Ash and Mintaro Slate Factory Yard =
Powder supported with Na Felspar and Kaolin. A full spectrum of tones =
and optical nuances ranging from a bright pale green natural transparent =
Celadon to smooth opaque dark umber. No signs of crazing so far.
I do like the empirical approach to glaze research. So simple. Se =
elemental. Such a challenge to be exploited.
Best regards.

Professor Ivor:

Did you do quads or non-standard Currie? Certainly you are not going to
say, "Nah, nay, look what I got" then run away without showing us!

Dear Taylor Hendrix.
I do not use the Currie Grid Method, standard or otherwise. I think if
you look into the Ian's work you will find he did some rather complex
algebra to get to his Matrix.
I use a 6*6 matrix with non standard values. I ignore the usual
0% -50% examples shown in Cooper and Royle's book, "Glazes for the
Studio Potter". If I am going to weigh out 36 samples using four
ingredients I need to have each ingredient in every one of the
samples, otherwise I waste more than 50% of my effort since only 16
mixtures contain all four ingredients. The 0 - 50 matrix gives 4
samples with 2 ingredients and 16 samples with 3 ingredients, so 20
out of 36 will never tell me what I need to know.
If you become involved with Glaze "Chemistry" in any depth you will
find that current theory ignores three quarters of the information
which could be made available for exploitation.
I will send you graphics files of test tiles by separate posts. As you
will not be able to access the materials I am using matrix values for
the tiles are of no consequence
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis. Redhill, South Australia
