I went to Mark Hewitt's sale this morning near Pittsboro,
North Carolina. It was a wonderful spring day to drive
through the country (albeit, on a 4-lane highway most of
the way).

His website is:
http://www.hewittpottery.com/

I took a few photos at the sale and posted some of them at:

I only bought a few small vases. I wanted the $1,500 pot
(the one I did not get a good photo of, but it's behind the
two large pots in the fourth photo).

Neal

A good display of strong forms with well developed contours
Perhaps the graphic work needs development.

Thanks for posting those photos, Neal. Mark is a wonderful teacher
and a great story-spinner. The photos of the sale are interesting
because of the great marketing I see going on here. You can see him
in many of the shots interacting with customers. He has placed his
work to suggest how the pots can be used to great effect--at the
entrance to a sidewalk, on a patio, on a wall, etc. His customers
get a chance to see his studio, go through the kiln. They learn
about the process. (The more you know, the more valuable an item
becomes.)

He also has the blessing of a savy wife who is his business manager
and I think he is still taking on apprentices who I'm sure help in
the sale.

But most of all, he makes wonderful pots. I always get a post card
from Mark, no matter that I'm on the other side of the US, if I ever
happen to be in that area when he does one of these, I'm going.

Hi Ivor,
Would you please elaborate on what you mean by "the graphic work needs
development"?
Thanks.

Dear Carol,
Study the Plates and consider the relationships between decoration and
the form.
Retaining the basic forms of both, there are openings for
exploitation.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis. Redhill, South Australia
