kaowool ceramic paper source

Hi Fred and all,

I'm not sure what Fred used but I use my kaowool paper over and over
again. Yes, it loses its "starch" after first firing and gets
progressively more fragile as continually used. But I just carefully
remove it onto a special board, or roll up a big piece, and save it for as
long as possible. I have a small roll and hope to never have to shop for
it again.

At that time I was talking about this on clayart alot. There is a glass
supplier near Chicago, Ed Hoy's International, 800-323-5668, that
sells "thinfire shelf paper" .008" a 250 foot roll for 319.00 in 1997
catalog I have. They list it for 4.25 per sheet as well. They also list
1/8" and 1/32" stuff. My advice would be for somebody who wants this stuff
to organize a clayart buying pool and share a roll. I just called them to
find out width of roll for you it is 41" so that is a VERY GOOD
DEAL!!!!! Making that phone call reminded me that this is a hard-nosed
operation about getting past go so be armed with your biz voice and info
when you call. (That's 854 sq ft for 319.=37c/sq ft. More like it, huh?

Ok--- Stupid newbie question time...
Couldn't one just pick up a can of spray starch
(which, at least in this part of the country (US)
is still available in just about every grocery store)
and spray the sheet once it is removed from the kiln?
That would definitely stiffen it again...better than that
Viagrada stuff the Mayor seems so fond of :>)

The starch would burn off in the next firing of course,
but at roughly $2.79 (US) a can, it seems cheaper than
Kaowool paper.
You can get a lot of use out of one can (don't go there!)

The kaowool paper i have used for glass will not fire high enough for clay
work.. Is this something different or new? What are the temp limits on the
kaowool being discussed?

Thanks Jim in Denton
