Does anyone know the temperature/cone to which mexican Saltillo tiles are fired?

True Mexican saltillo tiles were not fired at all. The tiles were
simply the local clay, packed into wooden forms, tamped well, and
then turned out into the tilemaker's yard to dry in the sun.
Which is why the tiles from the early days would sometimes have dog
and chicken prints in them.

Nowadays, I think they're fired (since they are machine made) to the
same temp as terracotta flower pots...low fire.

they are fired very low...probably about cone 012/010 ...not near 1000
degrees C....if you overfire, they will get brittle and crack. I have used
them in my homes with great success and after they are put in and grouted,
they are quite durable, to a point.....Melinda Collins, Antigua, Guatemala
