Grasping at one more straw, is it possible that the electrical contacts
in the kiln sitter switch are corroded and either don't make a good
connection, thus failure to reach temperature. Or, when the kiln sitter
trips the switch fails to release and thereby over fires?

Just SWAGing, but sometimes that brings results.
