David-
Your comment on granite counters in new houses made me think of what one my
neighbors always sez... "Granite counter tops are the shag carpet of the
90s!!"

Of course, I live in one of the older 'historic' neighborhoods in downtown
San Jose, so we get to make fun of trophy-home tract-house dwellers out in
the burbs...

David,

I guess that in the upscale, left coast environment where I live, people=20
just don't want to be seen with the cheap old plastic laminate any more. I=
=20
called all of the installers / custom cabinet shops and plastic fabricators=
=20
in the area and was told, "I used to have piles of those things, but we=20
don't do that any more." Times change.

Guess that I will have to go to the junkyard. Or maybe wait until a=20
neighbor replaces their formica with Corian, grab the scrap and cut it=
myself.

"I find I have a great lot to learn =96 or unlearn. I seem to know far too=
=20
much and this knowledge obscures the really significant facts, but I am=20
getting on." -- Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Darn, I miss the good old days. Formica laminate countertops are
good enough for me and they should still be good enough for the masses!
It's funny, but just the other evening we were talking about our 14-year
old house (and some needed repairs) and I said, "No one installs Formica
countertops any more."
I still love my plastic laminate kitchen counters, but they are showing a
little wear. They are wine red, backed with celadon with copper red
accents handmade tiles as a backsplash. I will replace the countertops
with more plastic laminate when the time comes, but then I know I am out
of synch with most fashion trends.
Last winter I visited an expensive new house in the area. There were
so many granite counters that I bet the counters alone cost half as
much as my house. Throw in the curved grand staircase and you would
probably have the cost of my whole house.

Some of the sink cutout bats that I have had since the early '70's are
absolutely horrid - bright yellow, white with little brown flowers, and
fake wood grain. It's fun just to see them.

We are approaching a similar critical situation in the automobile jack
field. How are we potters supposed to build bumper jack extruders
if all the new cars come with screw jacks?

Try a new, cheaper housing development. I used to get mine that way. When I
was teaching a group of kids, I found the pieces that they cut out for the
double kitchen sinks to make great working boards for the kids. We would just
staple canvas, or burlap on them and they each had their own boards to roll their
clay out on .
