type s thermocouple question

Bought the type S themocouples to use with an Orton auto fire. They are so
skinny! I am afraid I'll not see them and knock them with a shelf loading a
top loader. Do folks use the larger ceramic covers offered in the Axner
catalogue and if so is there much adjustment needed for temp response?

Hi Liz,

I've had an L&L with 3 thermocouples ( no covers) for 7 years.
I have yet to break one with a shelf. I just have a mindset
to tilt the shelves away from them when loading and unloading.
It's no different than the multitude of other important things we
make a point to remember in order to have safe successful firings.

In one of our older kilns, when I replaced the older K (I think) type
thermocouple with an S type the only thing I did was stuff some ceramic
fiber into the larger hole around the S type thermocouple to seal it and
tighten up the thermocouple.

I let some adult students who have been quite helpful and buying their own
kilns, unload one of the kilns just last week and they killed the
thermocouple. Apparently they were unaware they had done it because neither
would own up to it. They had to have dropped a shelf on it. That sucker
was BENT. I had to try to bend it straight in order to replace it (it no
longer worked. Those little puppies are strong, I find it hard to believe
the shelf could have bent it.........

Dear Earl;

That type S can be repaired by having a jeweller fuse the ends together
again. Platinum has a rather high melting point, so it takes a hot
flame.

Cheers, Hank in Annapolis, just having presented my workshop with a
very energetic group of potters there. This is so much fun!

You can use a ceramic sheath for your S-Type thermocouple. The only effect
the sheath will have on the thermocouple is to slow the temperature response
slightly. This should have no effect on ceramic firings.
