jigger vs casting

I am looking into the pros and cons of jiggering and casting. I love throwing but a torn ligament in my wrist makes it tough; therefore I am looking for commentary to decide which process makes the nicest work with the least of expense.

Questions I have are Start-up cost, work space and storage needs, and any info regarding maintenance.

All commentary is welcome. I thank everyone for there help!
Stacey

Stacy, slipcasting is the cheapest way to go to get set up, and you can
get more variety in form using molds. Jiggering setups can be pricey as
there is not only the jiggering apparatus itself, but the jigger molding
equipment as well. I use both slipcast molds and a jiggering setup but I
have years of moldmaking experience and take a lot of shortcuts not
available to most folks. And I still do a lot of throwing on my wheel.

I recently built and installed a jiggering system on my Brent CXC, and
would be glad to send pics if you would wish. Just let me know.

Thanks John! I really appreciate the help!!

I have some mold experience but I took time off from ceramics due to a car accident and haven't made any molds in almost 10 years (OUCH! I didn't even realise it had been THAT long ago! YIKES! Excuse me while I scare myself!)Any mold making hints you're game for sharing, I would certainly be greatful for the help.I do have Donald Frith's moldmaking book & discovered another one yesterday as I was going through the boxes of ceramic books I have.

In your mold making do you make rubber or latex models & mother molds and the casting molds from there?

With the jigger arm does that cut down on the start up and running costs or do you still need a lot of pricey molding equipment? I have thought about the jigger arm since it seems less costly and space consuming but I wasn't sure what to use to hold the form and keep it securely attached to the wheelhead. I would imagine some things just can't be made with a jigger which, would make casting a better option along with throwing.

Thanks for your help and I look forward to seeing your pictures too!!!
Stacey

I'm new to using clayart for info, but I would really like to know which
jiggering set up you used on your
Brent wheel. I'm not getting any younger and I'm afraid the need for a
jiggering contraption may come before I'm ready. I talked to the folks at
Axner when I was at NCECA and right now I'm looking at all the options,
