The purpose of tempering the elements at 1000F is to establish a coat of
oxidation on the surface of the elements. This oxidized surface is much more
resistant to degradation and attack than elements that have not been so tempered. I
have never used the ITC 213 on elements, but have heard of good results from
others using it. I wouldn't worry too much about what flakes off. You are
really adding one extra layer of protection to the elements in an attempt to
extend their useful life. Vacuum the element grooves clean, after your firings.
Removing any debris that is in contact with them is a good practice to avoid
premature failure. The final firing temperature has a great deal to do with how
long the elements last.

<elements first or just spray it now.>>

One word of caution. I have sprayed ITC 100 on the interior of one of my
kilns with the elements in place. Direct contact of the ITC 100 did not
detrimentally affect their life. There was one nasty surprise downside that I hadn't
expected. When the time came to replace those elements, it was an unpleasant job.
The ITC 100 had caused the coils to stick in their element grooves. Having to
pull them out in small pieces an inch at a time was a drag. In retrospect I
may have put it on a little thicker than was required. A light coating is all
that is recommended by the manufacturer. This will also make changing those
elements easier. This is a case where "more is not better". Wet the bricks down
(power disconnected) with a mister, before you spray, to avoid them sucking up
too much of the coating.

I have installed a complete set of new elements coated with I T C 213. The
elements came with the instructions to temper them at 1000 f for 8 hours.
the archives discuss the I T C flaking off for up to three firings.
There are no instructions on what to do to correctly temper the elements.
HELP ?
If I recoat the kiln interior with I T C 100, Do i need to temper the
elements first or just spray it now.
I have too much money and effort to be less than ideal.

I believe that you should NOT "temper" the elements before coating. The=20

Some differences that tell you ITC does have an effect. When I had to=20
remove/replace a standard element, it is very brittle and came out in=20
pieces. When I had to remove one coated with ITC 213 / ITC 100, it was=20

Dan,
I coated my kiln and elements last summer and spoke with the guy who
invented the ITC while I was doing the project. He said to skip the
tempering, brush on the ITC 213, and fire it up. He also recommended
reapplying-with a brush-the 213(leaving the elements in place) every 6
months or so. We applied the 213 by shaking the elements in a zip lock
bag with some 213 as Mel suggested. It worked great.

The flaking lasted much more than 3 firings for me. I lost count,
actually. But it doesn't hurt anything, just a nuisance to blow off.
Good Luck!
Kasia
