A while back many of you gave me suggestions on how to adjust my wedging =
table to help relieve problems with tendonitis in my elbows. I'm happy =
to say that the suggestions of lowering the table have worked very well. =
Thanks to all of you who gave suggestions. I also have had 6 visits to =
an acupuncturist and I now feel like a new woman! No more pain while I =
work, no more pain waking me in the middle of the night, no more pain =
when I extend my arms! I must admit that I was skeptical of the =
acupuncture thing however, I am now a believer. Unlike conventional =
medicine where they say take these pills and don't do anything for 6 =
weeks, I was able to continue to work while receiving treatments. =
According to my acupuncturist, "working is good, laying around doing =
nothing makes you fat, lazy, and good for nothing." If any of you =
fellow clayarters are suffering from pottery related pain you might want =
to investigate the possibilities of acupuncture BTW the little needles =
don't really hurt.
Peace,

Dear Allyson,
I was going to reply off list but thought hmmm I may not be the only one
suffering with tendon pain and maybe your accupuncture would help for the
tendons in the thumb area. Next time your being treated would you ask about the
thumb? I also wonder how it works ?? needles take the swelling down or does
the needle dull the pain ?
My thumb or more likely the tendons in my thumb area swell up and the
sheath around it gets rubbed the wrong way so to speak. It has been getting
progressively worse since last fall. The only thing the doc had to say is
take this here Naproxen 2x daily at 500 mgs each time .... yep worked after a
month plus of rest but good grief HEART BURN FROM HELL!!!!! For weeks
after I stopped taking it I still had HEARTBURN FROM HELL!!
Well I found that Naproxen doesnt do a thing for the pain once you get
into a new pain catagory . Using Glaze tongs and dipping for days can send
you into a new catagory of PAIN and nothing works to alleviate it. I am not
sure if Morphine would have worked
I have learned to ignore the pain as best I can and most of the time am
successful but it is very scarey because it gets worse not better each time it
acts up .. that last time my fist swelled up to the size of a baseball mitt
before I noticed it...( yeah I was hurting but I was also busy and had no time
to fuss with it ) It is also limiting as sometimes you just cant get a
grip...
So any imfo you can shower us with from your accupuncturist (free imfo)
would be most welcome. Also I'd love to hear from any others who suffer in
silence or if anyone has an answer... Giving up pottery is not an option for me...
its my life , my passion, my blood.. I will not stop even if my arms fall
off...

Hi all tendonitis sufferers,
Just my 2 cents worth on this subject ...
My elbow pain from tendonitis got to a point where it was really getting in my way in my work, so I did opt for surgery last July. I went through 2 months of not working as recuperation, but the problem is now SOLVED!! I had a good surgeon who cleaned out the bone spurs which occur and did whatever he had to do. He " cleaned out" anything he found and then some.
I have no more pain and have full movement and strength back.
By the time I made the decision to have the surgery, NOTHING worked to alleviate the pain. I tried meds, physical therapy, body workers, etc.
Surgery is always a hard choice and kinda scary, but in my case it worked.

Joe just had carpal tunnel surgery in both wrists, one in December
and one in January. In both cases, the thick callus was a bit of a
problem. But the doctor took the stitches out after about 1 1/2 weeks
and told him to go back to throwing... the best physical therapy he
could think of. At first it was smaller pieces, but after a few weeks
he was back to full speed. Robin Hopper told us he had the same
surgeries about 20 years ago and also came through in flying colors.
But, the thumb I take full credit for. I don't throw, but still
developed what the doctor called "a trigger thumb". Last December the
pain was horrible, bump it the wrong way and you feel like you just
broke it. The tendon develops a knot from inflammation and eventually
it won't go through the sheath at all.
In December the doctor gave me a shot right in the joint. Hurt like a
son of a gun, but worked just fine! For a few months, that is. Then,
slowly and surely it started back up. They don't like giving more
than one shot, so it was under the knife instead. I had my surgery
last Friday, and the stitches (only two) come out on Monday. Slight
bit of discomfort, but nothing like before. I already have almost
full range of motion.
So, for what it's worth, the surgeries are worth it in both types of
repetitive stress injuries. Just don't wait too long, especially with
carpal tunnel. A nerve conduction test will tell you for sure, and
waiting only compounds the damage. Joe was lucky, he was losing use
of his thumb on his right hand before they approved his surgery, now
working fine.
FWIW, IMHO,
Rita
