I don't know how to respond to mel.. whether to wail that it wouldn't be
the same without him and he is the heart of clayart (all true) .. or to
assume he is having more than a momentary loss of heart, and say,
"You've done more than your share".

Job description: spend hours a day wading through the spammers, whiners,
wackos and blather.. answer requests from everybody on the planet.. pay,
$0.00 USD.. makes you want to jump right in and take over, no?

I have had several chicken questions and so would dare offer this OT to
the list:

Chickens ovulate whether there's a rooster or not. So do women ;0) only
monthly, not daily. I wonder if chickens get PMS every day around
10am...

Some breeds are hyper and unpleasant, some overbred and brainless, some
have a bit of instinct left and remember what eggs are for/how to raise
chicks. Cochins have a little instinct left and a nice personality (er,
chickenality.) So do barred rocks, orpingtons, brahmas, most heavy or
feather footed breeds. bantams are little primal mommies and will hatch
anything, even somebody else's eggs, but their eggs are small and they
can fly, will roost in trees at night if you let them.

Resources: Carla Emery's Encyclopedia of Country Living has everything
yoou need to know about backyard fowl and other critters (also
gardening, recipes, dowsing for water, delivering your own baby,
anything you can think of.)

http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com has chicks of every breed, pix and
descriptions of their chickenalities, also a book called 'the chicken
tractor" and all kinds of supplies, hatching eggs for wild birds,
everything.

Wheel: My husband who is too funny took the freebie ancient pop-and-roar
simplicity tractor mower in the back yard and used contact paper and a
razor blade to paint flames on it a la "monster garage". (there was
already a lot of smoke.) My kids think he's a hero. So now I have taped
off my wheel and am headed out to find a way to paint it too.

Yours,
Kelly in Ohio.. so glad the windows are open and the kids out front
selling pots of renegade peppermint and their own seeded herbs in yogurt
containers to passers by.. until my husband mentioned it i didn't
realize i have a habit of whistling back to the birds outside to get a
call-and-response thing going..
