Hi:

Have any of you ever tried to throw dry porcelain? It's really a pain in
the Labonza.

Anyway, mel mentioned the Alfred body which is equal parts of kaolin, ball
clay, feldspar, and silica. Claybodies are mixed by weight. If the Alfred
body is mixed by equal measurements of all the ingredients it will be way
off in terms of accuracy. Clays have different molecular weights than
silicas and feldspars and silca and feldspar are different too. If you
fill an 8 ounce container with EPK, it weighs 165 grams. If you fill the
same container exactly to the brim with g-200 feldspar, and level it like
as you did when you weighed the EPK, it weighs 261 grams. Big difference.

You can mix claybodies by volume but the volumes for the various
ingredients won't be the same. You can weigh them out and get a volume
reference to use later. The Alfred body would be in the neighborhood of 1
cup of kaolin, 1 cup of ball clay, 1/2 cup of feldspar, and somewhere
around 1/2 cup of silica. This isn't accurate, just an approximation of
how it might be. You have to weigh it all out and go from there. Don't
forget to wear your dustmask.

I'll bet you're all just thrilled to know that.
