Chris,
I was told this is a polyethylene oxide strand. Glycols are forms of
alcohols.
The cost for this stuff is way cheaper too... $12.80/quart or 1/4 the cost
of the product you have mentioned.
Still, it could be very similar.

For anyone interested in the technical info on PEGs here is Dow Chemicals
technical data

Hope that helps,

Is this the same stuff that woodworkers use to keep
wood from checking (cracking)?

If so you might give your local woodworkers supply
store a call.

Crosscut Hardwoods, 1st Ave S. in Seattle might have it.

Your substance sounds identical to Polyethylene Glycols (also known as
Carbowax, Dow Chemicals brand name). It is used in many substances and is
also used in ceramics industries.

"PEGs are widely used in the ceramics industry as plasticizers, binders and
carriers. PEGs are designed to easily and smoothly be distributed throughout
the ceramic mass, providing good internal and external lubrication and
improved green strength. They have low toxicity, good water solubility to
improve equipment cleanup, and smooth, clean burnout during firing
operations." http://www.dow.com/polyglycols/carbowax/app/ceramic.htm

I looked for a source for the substance last night and finnally found a
supplier who sells it in something other than 55 gal drums :-) I also
discovered that PEG 400 is best for clay (it ranges from PEG 100-PEG 8000,
with the number refering to its molecular weight.)

for anybody interested in this chemical (which is non toxic btw according to
the MSDS, it is sometimes used in medicines and food) the website I finallu
found to buy from is:

http://www.usbweb.com/category.asp?cat=bio&id=19957

it is $28 for 500 ml and considering you only needs a few drops added to
your water 500 ml should last indeffinately.

PEG is available in auto parts stores as pet safe antifreeze . It may be
diluted some with water ; I don't know . But one can experiment as the price
is certainly right . I seem to remember paying $8.00 / gal .
