The Hambidge Center will be hosting an eight day Rick Berman workshop July
11th - 18th. The first three days will focus on firing the wood kiln (7-11
to 7-13), and the last five days will focus on salku firing and throwing
(7-14 to 7-18). The pottery studio will be open for student use throughout
the entire workshop. Students are encouraged to sign up for the entire
workshop, but may also choose to participate in only one section. Housing
is available on- site for this workshop for an additional charge. All
lunches and several dinners are also included in the price of the workshop.
Experience with clay is recommended.

Three day Wood Firing workshop: $150
Five day Salku workshop: $350
Eight day Berman extravaganza: $500

In the wood firing workshop, we will fire our wonderful anagama kiln, built
by Ben Owen III. This Japanese style kiln is built into the hill side, and
is a joy to fire. This kiln is very forgiving, yeilding great results to
both beginners and experienced wood firers! You will need to bring plenty
of bisqued pots, made out of cone 10 clay (the kiln can hold up to 500
pots!). Be prepared to work hard (bring gloves and non-flamable clothing)
moving and chopping wood, stoking the fire, scraping kiln shelves, etc.

Salku is a unique process that creates amazingly juicy pots! The kiln is
small and fired fast to stoneware temperatures. The pieces are glazed,
tumble- stacked, and surrounded by charcoal and salt. Learn all about how
to build and fire salku in this workshop. You will also need to bring
bisque fired pieces for this workshop. Additional time will be spent in the
studio working on the wheel and firing raku.

For those not familiar with Hambidge, it is located in the pristine
mountains of North Georgia, equidistant from Atlanta, GA and Asheville, NC.
Hambidge has a long- standing artist residency program, as well as a new
pottery facility. The ceramics program offers classes, workshops, and open
studio.
