buying a wheel)

Hi friends,

Does anyone have any experience they could share on Thomas Stuart's "bat mold
system" for their kickwheels? (See note below)

Sounds like an interesting concept, but I am curious...

(a) How well these bats would hold up in "everyday use" in the studio? (i.e.
- pins getting loose inside the plaster bat, or compromising the "tightness
factor" of staying firm to the wheel head).

(b) I assume that you have to cast these "right side up", directly on the
wheel head with the pins in place... if so... do you have to trowel off the top
during casting if one wants to achieve a nice smooth surface or how else might
this be addressed?

(c) How many of you TS wheel users out there have simply opted to have their
wheelhead drilled out for a standard bat pin system instead of using the TS
bat mold system?

Any thoughts on any of this would be enlightening... thanks in advance. :-)

Best regards,

- Ken

Thomas Stuart website states the following regarding their kickwheel:

"The bat mold system for the kick wheel incorporates strong plaster bats that
are cast with pins protruding from the bats, rather than the wheel head.
These pins fit into small holes drilled in the wheel head and are held in place
without the use of slip. Simply tighten the ring mold around the wheel head and
cast as many bats as you desire. 30 pins are provided to start you off with 10
bats and additional pins can be purchased from your local hardware store. You
are sure to enjoy the benefits of this system"
