LOL, Krista!
There is most certainly not a "pottery vacuum" in Oregon!
The Oregon Potter's Association (of which I am a member) is one of the largest in the country, I believe. We have a large and active group here and a very receptive and appreciative public. I am very fortunate to be where I'm at.
However, it is ME, who happens to be in a vacuum for at least the time being. Due to family circumstances ( a teenager still home, a terminally ill father, etc.) I have been
un-able to be as active and involved with other potters as I would like.
Nonetheless, I have a very full studio schedule and work full time for most of the year.
Husband and I live on an acreage in the country, and I'm very fortunate to have a beautiful studio/ kiln shed and a yurt which functions as my gallery.
I hold an annual studio show/sale every June at my place and between that event and one other, it keeps me hopping. Juggling the studio and my personal family commitments is pretty stressful at times.
I am looking forward to moving out into the clay community someday, but for the time being, I am grateful for what I've got.
I am extremely indebted to my friend George Wright who has built my kilns for me, ( we've just built a small wood-firing kiln that is another of his genius designs) as he has been my mentor for the last 9 years. What a sweet a generous man- and at 85 years old, he is a testimony to the longevity that can come with working in clay!
So, perhaps I exaggerated in describing myself as alone, but sometimes it does feel that way!
I do have a website if you'd like to look at my work. I have found my commercial niche in work for the garden. However, my heart remains in functional pieces and I work at the wheel when I can. I am SO looking forward to wood-firing!
Thanks again, Krista for your post. I'd look forward to meeting you......
Here's my website addy: www.pollywogpottery.com
